The power of palo

A lot of people are big into self-care lately and with good reason. Self-care isn’t about indulging in yourself or whatever other misconception, self-care is about taking care of yourself in fundamental ways so that your true self can be cleansed, nourished, and can grow. I’ve been on a self-care kick for a while and I have to say that I feel the effects.

With my morning journal ritual, breathing exercises, yoga practice, and other moments I take throughout the day to reflect and give gratitude, I truly feel a shift in my mood, my energy, and my outlook on life. I feel healthier and more alive, if that makes any sense at all!

I recently discovered a new local, all-natural company called PALO by Aimée & Mia. What they’ve done is incredible – they have brought in sustainably sourced Palo Santo so that people from all communities can have access to this wonderful gift.

What is Palo Santo?

Well, I’m glad you asked. Palo Santo is a ritualistic burning wood from the Bursera graveolens  tree native to South America. It is used to spiritually cleanse la mala energía – bad energy. The fragrant smoke scent energizes and also works to purify the air, eliminate toxins and other viruses that live in your home.

Here’s the thing about Palo Santo wood – it can be traced back to Incan Empire times when it was used for spiritual ceremonies and as a sort of folk medicine. Bringing it to Canada, or the “West” has been kind of sensitive topic for a lot of people who think it is being culturally appropriated and turned into some gimmicky trend.

PALO by Aimée & Mia are committed to sourcing their palo santo in a sustainable and ethical way. Straight from Ecuador, these sisters have brought the gift of the b. graveolens to our homes so that we can feel its immense benefits. Grounding, cleansing, and spiritually uplifting, if used properly and with integrity, the palo sticks can truly heal.

What PALO by Aimée & Mia have done is infuse several skin-care products with the oil of the Ecuadorian b. graveolens. For those who do not wish to bring in spiritual rituals into their homes through the burning of the sticks, they can indulge in the health-care benefits of the tree in body scrubs, body oils, bath salts, and other products.

When I discovered this brand, I was immediately drawn. The packaging is so simple and reminiscent of what it stands for – I think they’ve done a great job at preserving the meaning of the natural elements they’ve brought to us and hopefully consumers like me and you will do what we can to uphold these values. I know that whenever I burn the wood or soak in the tub, I channel my thoughts and energy toward the good, I give gratitude, and I let the powerful palo work its magic.
