mademoiselle jules mlle

I founded Mademoiselle Jules in 2014. What initially started out as a creative outlet, turned into a one-stop luxury lifestyle destination. From fashion and gastronomy to beauty, travel and more, Mademoiselle Jules is my place to share, inspire and empower women.

I’m Julie, a wife, mother, friend, and blogger and Mademoiselle Jules is my way of documenting the ongoings of my life, and sometimes it gets quite intimate. I’m always striving to find the perfect balance in my life and so by synthesizing all the things I love most in the world I get to have a job that feels like play and I am so grateful for that.

I traipse the globe and hit up amazing events, I meet incredibly fascinating people who are pursuing their passions, and I do it all while honouring my deep love for my hometown, Montreal. My visual aesthetic allows me to explore table styling in my endless search to kick my hosting up a notch, I experiment with beauty products and makeup trends and have curated an ever-evolving skincare routine, and of course I am always researching new designers, both local and international, to pay homage to the incredible talent that dreams up the most flawless designs, be it fashion-forward or classic. I see the beauty in impeccably executed ideas, so whether it’s a launch party, a well-designed concept resto, a killer lipstick, or a knock-out pair of shoes, I’ll let you know my thoughts!

Welcome to Mademoiselle Jules.

So, why did I choose to be Mademoiselle Jules?

A few reasons stand behind my choice – the easiest one to draw is the combination of French and English words that blend together to form my identity. Mademoiselle is my French address, while Jules is the nickname almost all of my English friends call me by.

Incidentally, Mademoiselle is a French title used to speak of unmarried women, equivalent to the word Miss in English. Challenged by feminists to be erased from the language, women fought to keep their marital status outside of official introductory courtesies, and guess what? They won. The generic form Madame is now used to speak of women, married, single, or other.

While I stand strong with the sisterhood fighting the good fight, I stay light in my step and am true to my playful self. I feel rejuvenated by the term and love that it carries space for passionate debate. By compounding my nickname, Jules, with an informal form of address, I show the vivacity of my free spirit and the flirtatious nature of my youthful soul.

Throwing it back to ancient times, Ma Demoiselle (meaning My Lady) was a sophisticated way to address the still youthful. That’s kind of me in a nutshell: young, free, and feminine.

Fun Facts:

-The daughter of a baker, I grew up with Boulangerie Au Pain Doré, which was owned by my family from 1956 to 2008. Three generations of the Etienne family worked there!

- A lot of people know me under the name of “Julie Pain Doré”, and for a pretty long time many  were convinced it was genuinely my last name!

-I've never had long hair. As a child, my mom used to continuously cut them. She believed in the old wives tale that cutting your hair would make it thicker! That's why I have three hairdressers.

-I'm a chameleon when it comes to accents. I can switch from Parisian to pure Quebecois in a flash! I am however still working on my english accent, lol!

- I have a college diploma in dance, and trained in classical ballet for 15 years.

- For four years, I was a cheerleader for the Montreal Alouettes.

- When it comes to fashion, I can mix Saint-Laurent and Céline with H&M and Zara.
