Artists with a Direction

I have so many ideas for creative photo shoots these days, my inspiration seems to be flowing. I don’t know if it’s the clothes this season and it’s simply that the trends really speak to me, or if it’s the current state of the world that has me looking for beauty wherever I can find it. Either way, I’m charged with creative vision and I’m channeling my inner artist whenever an opportunity presents itself.

The city is completely empty. Our normally bustling Montreal streets are vacant, it’s insane. What is typically a city filled with life has now become my photo shoot playground. No matter where I go, there is a chance to snap the most stunning pics –abounding with ample sunlight, industrious backdrops and pedestrian-less frames. I mean, there is something to be said about the emptiness, and trust me, I have my fair share of existential moments about it all, but rather than focus on the sadness, I have found a positive lining to our collective current moment… art!

My inner creative director is in full bloom. Always seeking the next best scene, Patricia and I drive the city over to find areas that provide the right compliment or juxtaposition to my outfits. Creating these editorial style photo essays, we’re really finding our groove this year and the truth is, it’s probably been my one harness throughout: using creativity as a driving force to lift us out of dark times. Isn’t that when the best novels, music, movies and paintings are made!?

The Formula 1 track out in Isle de Notre Dame provided the most perfect backdrop as the staircase allowed for bright light to reverberate and the space spoke to the expansiveness of our island. I paired my Praise shorts with old vintage Chanel boots (I think they may have been my mom’s!) with an Anine Bing shirt from TNT and an overcoat blazer ¾ of the way to the floor from LAMARQUE. A tiny spec of sparkle detail in Snoopy from Eye Accessorize added just the right amount of luxury to an otherwise day look. Another element that added layers of comfort as well as style is the Zara bib sweater, which totally brought me back to my Veronica Beard outfits from Fashion Week a few years ago.

By mixing traditional pieces with edgier ones, a neutral palette against a backdrop that tells a profound story allowed me to build layers of narrative through fashion and photography that I don’t think I had ever explored before. A point of introspection, I truly think that this year has been a transformative one and if we use the moment as a springboard for reflection, we can all find meaning and inspiration everywhere we look.
