The Romper Trend

It was probably when the maxi dress left the scene that the romper took over – short, long, denim, floral – no matter the style, rompers were hard to avoid. Well, no reason to stop wearing some version of the romper now, even if we are stuck at home (or better said, safe at home).

A welcome addition to my wardrobe, I embraced the jumpsuit trend with enthusiasm. There is something so clean and effortless about a one piece, I think the major draw for me is the idea of one unique print (monochrome or other) that creates a straight line from head to toe.

For a while, I gravitated toward the short and plunging necklines. Admittedly, I often swap a cocktail dress for a gussied-up romper. But, lately, I’ve gone slightly more streetwear with the look and have opted for denim jumpsuits.

I love the Joe’s Rika Jumpsuit (I got mine from How International). The all-in-one utilitarian look is inspired by workwear and has the belt tie to create a defined waist. What I love most about rocking a denim romper is that it can go either way: I can dress it up with heels and shiny accessories for a night look, or I can throw on some sneakers and oversized sweater for a day vibe (picture here at Brasserie 701).

Function meets fashion with the utility look. It’s efficient, comfortable and can really create a blank canvas for layering in personal style. I have my fair share of denim and khaki monochromatic looks, but I think the upcoming trends will take us to a more patterned place – florals, stripes, and even perhaps mixed and matched patterns (my ultimate favourite!).

It’s playful, it’s fun and most of all, it’s versatile. Depending on the embellishment, it can be quite formal and I’d say, if you haven’t found the silhouette that works for you, keep looking, because there is a romper out there for you.

They even make pj rompers and the cutest cotton jersey jumpers too… I might start a search that’ll take me through the night, cause - what else is there to do!? Suggestions on where to start my research are welcome :)
